Global solar photovoltaic capacity expansion

Overview

Global solar photovoltaic capacity has reached a significant milestone, surpassing three terawatts. While the growth rate showed signs of deceleration in 2025, with a drop from 28% to 16%, the overall pace of deployment has accelerated significantly over the last decade. The time required to add each subsequent terawatt of capacity has decreased from ten years for the first terawatt to less than two years for the third.

China has emerged as the primary driver of this global expansion, shifting leadership away from the wealthy nations that originally subsidized the technology. Although solar installations in developing countries have largely remained stagnant since 2020, recent increases in rooftop solar capacity have been noted in nations such as Pakistan, Nigeria, and the Philippines.

As solar energy begins to exceed 10% of global electricity demand, grid integration has become a critical challenge. Mature markets, including China and the European Union, are experiencing routine issues such as negative prices, voltage restrictions, and production curtailment. Specific stability and curtailment challenges have also been identified in Greece and Pakistan.
