Global study finds expanding low‑oxygen zones in deep oceans and new insights into polar marine life
Research aboard the Tara research vessel during its 2025‑2026 polar campaigns revealed how marine organisms survive beneath Arctic and Antarctic sea ice. The studies documented adaptations such as specialized pigments, flexible enzymes, and cryoprotective substances that allow algae and other organisms to thrive in near‑freezing, low‑light conditions.
A separate worldwide synthesis combined thousands of measurements from autonomous floats, probes and research cruises to map oxygen levels in the deep ocean. The analysis shows that low‑oxygen zones are spreading both in area and volume, driven by warming waters and slower currents.
