The research attributes the decline to three main drivers—warming that reduces oxygen solubility, nutrient runoff that fuels algal blooms, and altered circulation that limits deep‑water ventilation. Since the 1970s, global dissolved‑oxygen concentrations have fallen about 2%, with more than 200 sites across the polar regions and the Pacific, Indian and Atlantic oceans now experiencing persistent low‑oxygen conditions. Expanding dead zones jeopardize biodiversity, fisheries and marine mammals and risk disrupting biogeochemical cycles, food supplies and climate feedbacks. Mapping from autonomous floats and the Tara vessel shows low‑oxygen zones extending into previously stable habitats, while Arctic and Antarctic species exhibit physiological adaptations to near‑freezing, low‑light, low‑oxygen environments. Researchers warn that without immediate cuts to greenhouse‑gas emissions and nutrient pollution, deoxygenation could become irreversible within a human lifetime, threatening ecosystem stability and human food security.
