Global Sumud Flotilla Brings Humanitarian Aid to Gaza Amid Israeli Blockade

The Global Sumud Flotilla, organized by Italian activists, set out with 43 boats to break Israel’s naval blockade of Gaza and deliver food and medical supplies. The mission was inspired by activist Vittorio Arrigoni, who was killed in Gaza in 2011, and was described by spokesperson Maria Elena Delia as an effort to bring international attention to the worsening humanitarian situation.

The flotilla relied on Starlink satellite connections for communication, but Israeli forces jammed signals and attacked the convoy with drones for three and a half hours near Crete. Participants were intercepted, some detained in the Ketziot prison, and faced reports of abuse. The campaign also highlighted the broader challenges faced by humanitarian volunteers, including prior detentions of Italian activists in Libya.

A book recounting the mission’s experiences was published, with part of the proceeds pledged to the Palestine Journalism Hub to support families of journalists killed in Gaza. The flotilla’s organizers stress that their actions aim to keep Gaza’s plight visible on the world stage despite the risks and the Israeli government’s aggressive response.
