Global Sumud humanitarian convoy detained in Libya en route to Gaza

Ten members of the international Global Sumud humanitarian convoy were seized by forces in eastern Libya near the Sirte checkpoint and have been out of contact for more than 48 hours. The convoy, comprising over 200 volunteers from 25 countries, was attempting to reach Gaza by land and sea to deliver aid and protest the blockade.

Chile’s activists, including former student leader Víctor Chanfreau, who returned after being intercepted by Israel, reported harsh treatment of the detained volunteers and highlighted earlier threats received from both Turkish and eastern Libyan authorities. The Chilean Palestinian community has called for immediate information, safety guarantees and the release of the missing humanitarian workers.

The organization Global Sumud issued statements saying the convoy was violently attacked and forced to abandon its route, though the exact perpetrators remain unclear. The incident has raised international concern over the safety of aid missions to Gaza and the broader humanitarian crisis in the region.
