Global tourism spending hits $6.15 trillion amid rising overtourism concerns

Global leisure tourism is experiencing significant growth, with worldwide spending reaching $6.15 trillion in 2025. Europe remains a dominant force in this market, capturing approximately $2 trillion, or one-third of global leisure travel expenditures. Key destinations driving this growth include France, Spain, Italy, and Turkey.

Spain has emerged as a major economic leader in the sector, with international tourists spending €115.1 billion in 2025, ranking third globally behind the United States and China. The average spending per foreign tourist in Spain is approximately $1,344, notably higher than the European average of $1,068.

However, this rapid expansion has led to rising tensions in popular destinations. Residents in countries such as Spain, Greece, and Albania have staged protests against overtourism. Local populations report that massive influxes of visitors strain public infrastructure, exacerbate housing shortages, increase environmental pollution, and disrupt daily life.
