Global travel and tourism industry growth and overtourism

Overview

The global travel and tourism sector continues to expand, with the World Travel & Tourism Council (WTTC) projecting the industry will drive approximately US$ 12 trillion into the global economy in 2026. This represents a 3.2% growth rate and is expected to support an estimated 376 million jobs, accounting for roughly 9.9% of global GDP.

Regional growth is expected to be uneven. The Asia-Pacific and Africa regions are projected to lead with 5.4% growth each, while Central and South America are anticipated to grow by 4.1%. In contrast, the Middle East is forecasted to experience a 14.5% contraction, a decline attributed to the impact of regional conflicts on international tourist circulation and air traffic.

Recent data highlights the scale of leisure tourism spending, which reached $6.15 trillion in 2025. Europe remains a dominant market, capturing approximately $2 trillion of that total, with France, Spain, Italy, and Turkey serving as key destinations. Spain has emerged as a major economic leader, ranking third globally behind the United States and China, with international tourists spending €115.1 billion in 2025.

However, this rapid expansion has triggered rising tensions regarding overtourism. In destinations such as Spain, Greece, and Albania, residents have staged protests. Local populations report that massive visitor influxes strain public infrastructure, exacerbate housing shortages, increase environmental pollution, and disrupt daily life.
