GLP-1 drugs show promise in treating PMOS hormonal disorder

Research indicates that GLP-1 medications, commonly used for obesity, show significant promise in treating polyendocrine metabolic ovarian syndrome (PMOS). PMOS is a hormonal condition affecting approximately one in eight women globally. The disorder is characterized by symptoms such as weight gain, abnormal menstrual cycles, and unwanted facial hair.

Studies led by Dr. Melanie Cree suggest these drugs may be effective by addressing key drivers of the disease, including insulin resistance, hormone balance, and ovulation. PMOS was recently renamed from polycystic ovary syndrome to shift medical focus away from ovaries and cysts.

For many patients, diagnosis is difficult due to overlapping symptoms with other conditions. While traditional management has relied on birth control and lifestyle changes, these new findings offer potential for more targeted symptom relief.
