PMOS is recognized as a complex endocrine and metabolic condition affecting approximately one in eight women. It can impact blood sugar regulation, mood, energy levels, and long-term heart health, with increased risks for type 2 diabetes, high blood pressure, and fatty liver disease. Clinical studies continue to highlight significant cardiovascular risks, with a University of Pennsylvania analysis reporting that women with PMOS are four times more likely to develop cardiovascular disease. Regarding treatment, GLP-1 obesity medications are showing promise for improving insulin resistance and hormone balance. A global coalition of health leaders is now calling for urgent research into PMOS subtypes to address a projected surge in prevalence among adolescents and young women by 2036.
