GLP-1 weight loss medications face medical warnings over safety risks
Medical experts and organizations are raising alarms regarding the widespread and often unsupervised use of GLP-1 receptor agonist medications, commonly known as 'weight loss pens.' In Brazil, the Sociedade Brasileira de Pediatria (SBP) has issued specific alerts regarding the risks of using these drugs in children and adolescents without strict medical supervision.
Clinical data highlights several significant health risks associated with these treatments. A 2024 study published in Clinical Medicine showed that semaglutide users experienced a 2.6% decrease in hip bone mineral density and a 2.1% decrease in lumbar spine density compared to a placebo group over 52 weeks. Furthermore, experts warn that unsupervised use can lead to complications involving the pancreas, gallbladder, and digestive system, as well as potential muscle loss and metabolic imbalances.
In Mexico, there is a growing trend of self-medication through informal markets, despite laws requiring a medical prescription for drugs like Ozempic, Wegovy, and Mounjaro. While these medications offer significant benefits—including reduced risks of cardiovascular events like heart attack and stroke, and protection against chronic kidney disease—specialists emphasize that they are not a substitute for bariatric surgery in cases of severe obesity and must be managed by professionals to avoid dangerous side effects.
