Body image and GLP-1 medication trends in Brazil
Overview
Health experts and regulatory bodies in Brazil are intensifying warnings regarding the use of GLP-1 receptor agonists, such as semaglutide and tirzepatide, for weight loss. While effective for obesity, a systematic review of over 15,000 participants indicates that rapid weight loss via these ‘weight loss pens’ can lead to significant reductions in lean muscle mass.
Medical specialists, including the Brazilian Society of Pediatrics (SBP), have issued national alerts regarding unsupervised use among children and adolescents. Potential adverse effects for younger populations include growth and development deficits, dehydration, electrolyte imbalances, acute pancreatitis, and gallbladder issues. Experts warn that using these drugs for purely aesthetic purposes may trigger eating disorders like anorexia and bulimia, as well as anxiety and depression.
The SBP and the Brazilian Society of Endocrinology and Metabology (SBEM) emphasize that improper use can lead to significant loss of muscle mass and micronutrient deficiencies. To combat sarcopenia, endocrinologists recommend maintaining high protein intake alongside strength training. Specifically, endocrinologist Marcio Mancini suggests a protein intake of 1.2g/kg/day for healthy young individuals and 1.5g/kg/day for the elderly or those at risk of sarcopenia to mitigate the effects of intense appetite suppression and delayed gastric emptying.
Recent expert warnings reiterate that these drugs are medical treatments for conditions like obesity and type 2 diabetes, rather than supplements. Specialists note that weight loss after age 40 requires a more complex approach involving hormonal, metabolic, and nutritional considerations. Regulatory and market shifts continue as Anvisa prohibits unregistered products. The SBP advises against using clandestine or imported preparations lacking sanitary registration and recommends using the term ‘medications to treat obesity’ rather than ‘weight-loss pens’ to better recognize obesity as a chronic disease.
