GLP-1 weight loss medications impact public health and plastic surgery

The integration of GLP-1 analogues into Brazil’s Unified Health System (SUS) marks a shift in treating obesity as a chronic, multi-causal disease rather than a behavioral failure. The Ministry of Health’s approach focuses on a structured care line, where access is conditioned to formal diagnosis, specific clinical criteria, and multidisciplinary follow-up to ensure safety and long-term efficacy.

As these weight-loss medications, such as Ozempic and Mounjaro, become more widespread, they are also altering the patient profile in plastic surgery. Significant weight loss often leads to concerns regarding excess skin and changes in body and facial contours. Specialists note that skin retraction varies based on age, genetics, and the speed of weight loss, often requiring surgical intervention when natural elasticity is insufficient to accommodate the new body volume.
