Medical experts warn of risks from unsupervised GLP-1 weight-loss medication use

Medical experts and the Sociedade Brasileira de Pediatria (SBP) are issuing urgent warnings regarding the unsupervised use of GLP-1 receptor agonists, commonly known as weight-loss pens. The SBP specifically highlighted risks for children and adolescents, noting that improper use can lead to growth and development deficits, dehydration, electrolyte imbalances, muscle loss, acute pancreatitis, and gallbladder issues. Furthermore, using these medications for purely aesthetic purposes may trigger eating disorders like anorexia and bulimia, as well as anxiety and depression.

Specialists emphasize that these drugs are medical treatments for conditions like obesity and type 2 diabetes, not supplements. Unsupervised use, including self-adjusting doses or using products without sanitary registration from agencies like Anvisa, poses significant health risks. Experts also note that weight loss after age 40 requires a more complex approach involving hormonal, metabolic, and nutritional considerations.

To mitigate risks such as excessive muscle loss and micronutrient deficiencies, endocrinologists recommend prioritizing nutritional density. Suggested protein intake targets are approximately 1.2g/kg/day for healthy young individuals and 1.5g/kg/day for the elderly or those at risk of sarcopenia.
