GLP-1 weight loss medications spark clinical debate among health professionals
Health professionals and academics are increasingly discussing the clinical use of GLP-1 agonists, commonly known as “weight loss pens,” as a tool for managing obesity and metabolic diseases. At a recent nutrition academic event at UNIGRAN, experts emphasized that while these medications are powerful tools, they must be integrated into a comprehensive strategy involving medical supervision, nutritional guidance, physical activity, and mental health support.
Experts warn that using these medications without proper oversight, or pursuing aggressive weight loss goals through restrictive diets, can lead to a “rebound effect” or weight cycling. Such practices may also result in the loss of muscle mass and nutritional deficiencies. Professionals recommend focusing on gradual changes, maintaining protein intake, and prioritizing nutritional density to ensure sustainable health outcomes.
