Gümüşhane honey production drops by up to 50% due to climate

Honey production in the highlands of Gümüşhane, Turkey, has seen a significant decline for the 2026 season. Local beekeepers and officials from the Gümüşhane Beekeepers Association report that yields have dropped by 40% to 50% due to adverse climate conditions and irregular rainfall.

In some specific areas, the decline in production has been even more severe, with losses reaching up to 90% or even 100%. The region is known for its rich flora, including thyme, acacia, and various wildflowers, which typically support high-quality organic honey production.

Professional migratory beekeepers, such as Selim and Raci Lötek, who have operated in the region for 25 years, noted the impact of the weather on the harvest. They follow a seasonal cycle that involves moving hives to Antalya for wintering in October and returning them to the Gümüşhane highlands in May. In addition to honey, producers are also focusing on the promotion of pollen, propolis, and royal jelly.
