GNR arrests leader of international drug trafficking network

The Guarda Nacional Republicana (GNR) has arrested the primary leader of an international drug trafficking organization in Portalegre. The suspect had been a fugitive from justice for approximately 13 months.

The arrest is the culmination of a three-year investigation conducted in close cooperation with the Spanish Guardia Civil. The operation aims to dismantle a transnational criminal network involved in coordinating narcotics trafficking with significant operations in Portugal.

This development follows a major operation in July 2025, which dismantled the group's logistical structure and resulted in 49 arrests across Portugal and Spain. During that previous operation, authorities seized seven tons of hashish, 650 kilograms of cocaine, 18 high-speed boats, 11 firearms, and approximately 780,000 euros in cash. The suspect is currently in preventive detention.
