Filo Jet investigation: Suspects detained as evidence reveals improper ship repairs

Investigations into the Filo Jet passenger ship disaster, which occurred off the coast of Girne on August 30, have revealed new evidence regarding vessel maintenance. During a recent hearing at the Girne Accident Court, nine suspects—including company executive Ali Özdüşler, Captain Mustafa Öz, and Second Captain Merve N. Sercan—were ordered to remain in custody for an additional seven days.

Police presented digital evidence, including WhatsApp messages and photos from June, showing that the ship’s left bow was broken weeks before the sinking. Evidence suggests the damage was repaired in a makeshift manner without professional oversight, and that company officials were notified of the defect. Investigators are also examining the captain’s maritime license, which was reportedly obtained through an intermediary in Istanbul.

The death toll has risen to 15 following the recovery of another victim's body, while search operations continue for 13 remaining missing persons. The vessel, which was traveling from Girne to Taşucu, reportedly began taking on water shortly after departure. Authorities noted that if the repairs are proven to have been conducted outside of an authorized shipyard, the legal charges against the suspects may be escalated.
