Godfrey Lebeya denies links to Big Five Cartel at Madlanga Commission

Former Hawks head Godfrey Lebeya testified before the Madlanga Commission of Inquiry, denying any links to the alleged “Big Five Cartel” organized crime network. Lebeya stated he was unaware of the syndicate or its members, including alleged underworld figure Katiso “KT” Molefe, until the matter was raised during the commission's proceedings.

Lebeya defended his integrity, describing himself as “incorruptible” and asserting that he has maintained a clean record throughout his 40-year career. He rejected suggestions that his inclusion in the inquiry implies involvement in corruption, noting that no witnesses have provided evidence of him receiving illicit payments.

The testimony addressed scrutiny regarding his tenure as head of the Directorate for Priority Crime Investigation (DPCI/Hawks), specifically concerning interactions between his subordinates and individuals linked to the cartel. Lebeya also addressed a 2024 incident where he received a call from an alleged fixer, Malcolm X, during a raid on Molefe’s residence. While Lebeya claimed the call was to verify if officials were impersonating Hawks officers, the commission questioned the nature of his relationship with the individual.
