Madlanga Commission inquiry into Godfrey Lebeya

Former Hawks director Lieutenant-General Godfrey Lebeya has provided testimony before the Madlanga Commission of Inquiry regarding his tenure and alleged connections to organized crime.

Lebeya denied allegations of interfering in a December 2024 police raid at the Sandton residence of businessman Katiso “KT” Molefe. He testified that his decision to deploy officers was prompted by information from a TikTok influencer regarding individuals impersonating Hawks officials, rather than an attempt to disrupt the operation. He attributed any chaos during the raid to poor coordination by the executing team.

In subsequent testimony, Lebeya denied any links to the “Big Five Cartel” organized crime network, stating he was unaware of the syndicate or its members until the commission's proceedings. Describing himself as “incorruptible,” he maintained that his 40-year career has been free of illicit payments. The commission has scrutinized his relationship with various individuals and the actions of his subordinates during his leadership of the Directorate for Priority Crime Investigation.
