Godzilla Minus Zero receives franchise-first R rating
The upcoming film Godzilla Minus Zero has received its first-ever R rating from the Motion Picture Association (MPA) in the 72-year history of the franchise. The rating was issued due to “some violent content and bloody images.”
Directed by Takashi Yamazaki, the film serves as a sequel to Godzilla Minus One and is set in 1949, two years after the previous events. The story follows the Shikishima family as they attempt to rebuild in postwar Japan, only to face a new threat involving a regenerated Godzilla and the arrival of King Ghidorah.
The shift to an R rating signals a more visceral and darker tone compared to the PG-13 rating of its predecessor. The production is notable for being the first Japanese production filmed for IMAX using certified high-definition digital cameras. The film is scheduled for release in various markets, including North America on November 6, 2026.
