Godzilla Minus Zero receives positive reviews at NYFF premiere

The highly anticipated sequel to the Oscar-winning Godzilla Minus One, titled ‘Godzilla Minus Zero’, has received overwhelmingly positive early reviews following its world premiere at the New York Film Festival. Critics have praised director Takashi Yamazaki for increasing the film’s scale and visual spectacle, with some comparing the sequel to cinematic landmarks like ‘The Dark Knight’ and ‘Terminator 2’.

One of the most significant developments is that ‘Godzilla Minus Zero’ is the first film in the 72-year franchise history to receive an R rating for violent content and bloody images. Yamazaki defended the decision, stating that certain scenes were essential to the film’s integrity and that he refused to censor them to achieve a more accessible rating.

Set in 1949, two years after the events of the first film, the story follows the Shikishima family as they face a new threat involving the legendary kaiju King Ghidorah. The film is noted for being the first Japanese production in the franchise shot for IMAX. ‘Godzilla Minus Zero’ is scheduled for release in Japan on November 3 and in North America on November 6, 2026.
