Godzilla Minus Zero trailer reveals sequel set in 1949 Japan

Toho and GKIDS have released the official trailer and poster for ‘Godzilla Minus Zero’, the direct sequel to the Oscar-winning ‘Godzilla Minus One’. Directed, written, and visually effects-led by Takashi Yamazaki, the film is set in 1949, two years after the events of the previous installment, as Japan struggles to rebuild following World War II.

The new footage suggests that Godzilla was not fully destroyed and hints at the arrival of a second, potentially more dangerous threat: the legendary three-headed dragon, King Ghidorah (also known as Monster Zero). The trailer features returning leads Ryunosuke Kamiki and Minami Hamabe, alongside new cast members including Masami Nagasawa as weather forecaster Makoto Aoyama.

As the first Japanese production filmed specifically for IMAX, the film will utilize high-definition digital cameras and optimized sound for large-format screens. ‘Godzilla Minus Zero’ is scheduled for a domestic Japanese release on November 3, 2026, with a North American release following on November 6, 2026. It will also make its world premiere at the 64th New York Film Festival on September 26.
