Goethe-Institut closes all Russian branches amid diplomatic crisis

The Goethe-Institut is closing all three of its Russian branches in Moscow, St. Petersburg, and Novosibirsk by September 13, 2026. The Russian Foreign Ministry ordered the closures following Germany’s retaliatory sanctions against Russian cultural and diplomatic operations.

The diplomatic breakdown follows German authorities blaming Moscow for an attempted drone attack at Leipzig airport in August 2026. In response, Germany closed the Russian House in Berlin, the Russian Consulate General in Bonn, and tightened visa restrictions for Russian citizens.

The closures represent a significant rupture in German-Russian cultural relations. The shutdown will end training programs, close libraries, and severely limit access to German language education. This poses particular challenges for ethnic Germans and students who must now travel to other countries to sit for required German language certification exams for resettlement or education purposes.
