GOG introduces 3D scans and printable templates for classic PC game boxes
GOG has expanded its Preservation Program to include the digital archiving of physical game packaging. Through a collaboration with Benjamin Wimmer of the Big Box Collection, the digital storefront is providing interactive 3D scans of original PC game boxes for selected titles.
Users can download rotatable 3D models of the box art—including the front, back, and spine—which can be viewed using built-in tools on Windows and macOS without additional software. Additionally, the initiative provides printable flat versions of the packaging in PDF and SVG formats. This allows enthusiasts to engage in a papercraft project by cutting, folding, and gluing the templates to create physical replicas of classic ‘big box’ editions.
The current selection of games featuring these assets includes Star Trek: 25th Anniversary and Armikrog, alongside existing program titles such as Descent, Hitman: Codename 47, and Myst.
