GOG digital preservation of classic game packaging

Overview

GOG has expanded its Game Preservation Program to include the digital archiving of physical video game packaging. In collaboration with the Big Box Collection, the initiative provides interactive 3D scans of original “big box” containers from the 1990s and early 2000s, allowing users to view the front, back, and spine of the art via standard tools on Windows and macOS.

To facilitate physical reconstruction, the program also offers printable flat templates in PDF and SVG formats for papercraft projects. The current selection of preserved titles includes Star Trek: 25th Anniversary, Armikrog, Descent, Hitman: Codename 47, and Myst. The project aims to preserve the complete historical experience, including the physical aesthetics and manuals, alongside the software itself.
