Goiânia mayor allocates R$20 million to health autonomy program

Mayor Sandro Mabel of Goiânia announced the launch of the Programa de Autonomia Financeira das Unidades de Saúde (Pafus), committing a total of R$20 million for 2026. The first R$10 million transfer was delivered on 10 July, with a second R$10 million scheduled for September.

Under Pafus, each of the city’s 11 emergency units receives R$100 000 and each of the 106 basic health units, plus mental‑health centers, receives R$70 000. The funds, drawn from the municipal health fund, are managed directly by each unit’s own bank account, enabling rapid purchase of supplies, repairs, and equipment such as air‑conditioning units. Executives and staff form oversight commissions to monitor spending and report quarterly to municipal health authorities.

Officials said the scheme, modeled on a similar education‑finance program, is intended to eliminate delays in routine maintenance and improve overall service quality for Goiânia’s residents.
