Goiás accounts for 40% of childhood obesity in Central-West Brazil

Data from the Ministry of Health’s Food and Nutritional Surveillance System (Sisvan) indicates that Goiás accounts for 40% of childhood obesity cases in Brazil’s Central-West region. Out of 469,899 children aged zero to 10 evaluated, 43,900 are classified as obese, meaning one in three children in the state is either overweight or obese.

In response to these figures, physical educator and state deputy candidate Felipe Mabel has proposed using adapted gym training programs as a combat strategy. To address concerns that gym environments might hinder physical or psychological development, Mabel suggests implementing methods that prioritize playfulness and avoid joint overload to ensure the exercises do not exacerbate existing physical stress in children.
