Goiás approves pork in school meals as exports rise
The Legislative Assembly of Goiás has approved a bill that mandates the inclusion of pork in the public school meal menu at least once a week. The legislation, proposed by Deputy Talles Barreto, now awaits executive sanction. This move follows two decades of mobilization by the Associação Goiana de Suinocultores (AGS) to stimulate the local economy and provide high-quality protein to students.
In a related economic development, pork exports from Goiás grew by 15.3% in volume during the first half of 2026 compared to the previous year. According to data from the State Secretariat of Agriculture, Livestock, and Supply (Seapa), the state exported 10.8 thousand tons of pork, generating US$ 20.0 million in international revenue. Singapore emerged as the primary destination, accounting for 47.5% of the total export value.
