Agricultural and consumer food trends in Goiás

The state of Goiás is experiencing significant shifts in its food and agricultural sectors. In August 2026, the Legislative Assembly of Goiás approved a bill to mandate pork in public school meals at least once a week, a move supported by the Associação Goiana de Suinocultores to boost the local economy. This follows a period of growth for the state’s pork industry, which saw a 15.3% increase in export volume during the first half of 2026.

Data from IBGE indicates a parallel expansion in the poultry sector, with chicken slaughtering increasing by 7.1% between January and March 2026. The total carcass weight rose by 10.5%, maintaining Goiás as the fifth-largest producer in Brazil. Poultry exports from the state reached US$ 370.5 million in the first seven months of 2026, driven by demand from China, Japan, and the United Arab Emirates.

Simultaneously, the region is seeing a surge in the frozen meal market. Driven by changing consumer habits linked to the use of GLP-1 medications, orders for frozen meals in Goiás grew by 25.2% in the first half of 2026, significantly outpacing the national average of 13%. Consumers are increasingly seeking smaller portions and higher protein concentrations. While the accessibility of weight-loss medications is altering spending patterns—shifting budgets from dining out toward quality-of-life products—the Brazilian Association of Supermarkets (Abras) notes that the overall impact on the average supermarket ticket remains limited.
