Operation Safra Oculta targets grain trade tax evasion scheme

The Public Ministry of Goiás (MPGO) launched Operation Safra Oculta to dismantle a large-scale tax evasion scheme within the interstate grain trade. The investigation targets organized crime, money laundering, and tax fraud.

Authorities have issued nine preventive arrest warrants and 13 search and seizure warrants across the states of Goiás, Santa Catarina, São Paulo, Mato Grosso, and Bahia. The operation revealed the use of 'noteiras' (shell companies) and straw men to issue fraudulent tax documents and conceal the true beneficiaries of the transactions.

Two primary companies under investigation have accumulated over R$ 90 million in unpaid ICMS taxes. One of these entities reportedly moved nearly R$ 200 million in a very short period. The investigation also includes three accountants suspected of structuring the fraudulent operations and is looking into the involvement of rural producers and other business owners who may have used the scheme to avoid tax obligations.
