Goiás government mobilizes municipalities to combat dengue and chikungunya

The Governor of Goiás, Daniel Vilela, has convened municipal leaders to establish a joint protocol for combating Aedes aegypti, the mosquito responsible for transmitting dengue, zika, and chikungunya. This mobilization follows a significant rise in infections, with the state recording 108,540 confirmed dengue cases—a 17% increase compared to the previous year—and a 343% surge in chikungunya cases, totaling 11,309.

To address the outbreak, the state government announced a ‘Dia D’ (Action Day) for November 26, aimed at intensive mosquito control and public awareness. The strategy includes expanding the operating hours of Basic Health Units, ensuring the supply of rehydration solutions and medications, and monitoring vaccine and test stocks.

Technological measures are also being deployed, such as the use of ovitraps to monitor mosquito egg concentrations in 104 municipalities and the implementation of Larvicide Disseminating Stations. Authorities attribute the increase in cases to favorable climatic conditions, including heat and early rains, potentially exacerbated by the El Niño phenomenon.
