Goiás Public Prosecutor pushes for expanded hospital assistance reforms

The Public Prosecutor's Office of Goiás (MPGO) filed an appeal to broaden a court‑ordered restructuring of hospital assistance in Goiânia. The original judgment found the municipality had omitted essential health services and imposed obligations to regularise the hospital network. MPGO now seeks to add further measures deemed crucial for a structural solution to the city’s health‑care crisis.

Inspections by the prosecutor’s special health defence group uncovered serious deficiencies: prolonged patient stays in emergency units, including intubated individuals in unsuitable locations; 76% of patients remained over 24 hours in urgent‑care settings; about 650 people were waiting for hospital beds, with 127 needing intensive‑care units. The report also highlighted shortages of staff and supplies, misuse of health funds for non‑health purposes, and a lack of specialised beds in orthopaedics, paediatrics, neurosurgery and burn care.
