Gold mining in Mayoko District causes environmental damage

Gold mining operations led by Chinese operators in the Tsinguidi area of the Mayoko District, Republic of the Congo, are causing significant environmental damage. Reports indicate that large areas of forest have been degraded and soils have been deeply disrupted by extraction activities.

The Bakouhoudou River, a vital water source for local communities, has seen its course altered and its waters heavily disturbed by mining waste and sediment. These ecological changes threaten the local ecosystem and the long-term subsistence of residents who depend on the river.
