Overview

In the Ituri province of eastern Democratic Republic of the Congo, a fast-moving Ebola outbreak caused by the Bundibugyo virus has resulted in more than 2,300 deaths among at least 5,000 reported cases.

Containment efforts are being complicated by mobile artisanal gold miners operating in hard-to-reach, unsafe, and often illegal territories. The constant movement of these workers makes it difficult for health officials to track potential exposure. Additionally, standard prevention measures like social distancing and regular handwashing are rarely practiced at mining sites. Medical responders face further challenges because there are currently no specific treatments or vaccines available for this particular strain.
