Golden Leo cargo ship sinks after Russian strike near Odessa

The Russian Ministry of Defence announced that its forces struck Ukrainian ports, including the Chornomorsk cargo terminal near Odessa, which Moscow said was handling military cargo. On 19 July a bulk carrier flying the Guinea‑Bissau flag, the Golden Leo, was hit by three Russian cruise missiles while leaving Chornomorsk loaded with Arab coffee. The attack caused a severe fire, extensive structural damage and casualties. Ukrainian authorities reported that nine crew members were killed and eight rescued; other reports mention ten dead. The vessel remained afloat for a week before capsizing and sinking on 26 July in the Black Sea off Odessa. Ukraine condemned the strike as a breach of international maritime law, while Russia issued no further comment.
