Goldman Sachs reports fuel market shift as refineries prioritize diesel

The global fuel market is undergoing a significant realignment as refineries shift production focus from gasoline to diesel. According to reports from Goldman Sachs, this transition is tightening gasoline supplies and driving price volatility.

The price gap between gasoline and diesel has widened dramatically, moving from a difference of approximately 3 dollars per barrel a year ago to over 60 dollars today. While diesel has previously faced intense market pressure, analysts suggest gasoline now holds greater growth potential due to more inelastic demand and shifting stock levels.

Supply constraints are further exacerbated by geopolitical tensions, including the conflict between Russia and Ukraine and tensions between the US and Iran. Data shows that gasoline production in OECD economies has decreased by nearly 2%, while exports have fallen by 24% on an annual basis. Looking ahead, Goldman Sachs notes that gasoline futures for June 2027 have already seen significant increases.
