Goldman Sachs questions former chief lawyer Kathy Ruemller over Jeffrey Epstein ties
Goldman Sachs queried its former chief legal officer Kathy Ruemller in 2023, 2025 and 2026 about her connections to convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein after growing congressional scrutiny. The internal reviews had not been reported previously.
Ruemller resigned from Goldman at the end of June 2024 following Justice Department documents that showed extensive communications with Epstein and the acceptance of gifts. She testified before the House Oversight Committee, describing Epstein as a “masterful liar” and saying she would have reported him had she known of abuse.
During the inquiries she told the bank she knew Epstein, had communicated and “dealt” with him, and that he acted as a primary adviser to one of her clients. Ruemller now serves in an advisory capacity at Goldman and is involved in selecting a new general counsel.
In her testimony she also admitted sending an “extraordinarily poor taste” joke about Epstein’s massage, referencing a half‑spa day gift he gave her at New York’s Peninsula hotel.
