Overview

In mid‑July 2026 Goldman Sachs senior counsel Kathryn Ruemmler testified before the U.S. House Oversight Committee about her past contacts and gifts from convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein. She called the relationship a “mistake” and described Epstein as a “masterful liar,” asserting she never saw evidence of ongoing criminal conduct and would have reported any abuse.

Committee leaders, including Chairman James Comer and Rep. Robert Garcia, pressed her on thousands of Justice Department‑released emails, lavish gifts and her use of the nickname “Uncle Jeffrey,” questioning her credibility and her role in shaping Epstein’s public image. Goldman disclosed internal reviews of Ruemmler’s ties to Epstein in 2023, 2025 and 2026—reviews that had not been reported earlier. The bank noted that Ruemmler resigned as chief legal officer at the end of June 2024 and remained in an advisory capacity, participating in the search for a new general counsel.

Following the hearing, Rep. Robert Garcia sent a letter to CEO David Solomon demanding that Goldman cut all remaining ties with Ruemmler by Aug. 21 and replace her with a general counsel unconnected to Epstein or Ghislaine Maxwell. The request references Ruemmler’s remarks about alleged victim Virginia Giuffre and is part of the broader congressional probe into Goldman’s handling of the Epstein scandal.
