Southern California Heat Wave Sparks Ozone Advisory and Fire Threats

The South Coast Air Quality Management District issued an ozone advisory as a heat wave drives ozone levels into the Unhealthy category across inland cities such as Redlands, Crestline, San Bernardino, Riverside, Glendora and the Coachella Valley. The National Weather Service also posted Heat Advisories and Extreme Heat Warnings for the region. Residents are urged to limit outdoor activity, avoid gasoline‑powered equipment and conserve electricity.

A brush fire dubbed the Silver Fire ignited early Saturday near Castaic on the northbound 5 Freeway. Firefighters from the Los Angeles County Fire Department contained the blaze, which grew to about two acres, with no injuries or structures threatened. The cause remains under investigation.

Meteorologists warn that a strong El Niño, with an 81% chance of being a Super El Niño, is warming Pacific waters and could extend the heat in Santa Barbara County. Forecasts suggest either a wetter or drier winter, while warmer ocean currents may benefit local fisheries.

The County of Santa Barbara has declared an extreme heat warning for the Cuyama Valley and interior mountains, and a heat advisory for most of the county. Strong evening winds and low humidity raise fire‑weather risk, especially in the southwest. Community cooling centers and resources have been listed to help residents stay safe.
