Heat dome drives record heat, alerts and power shutoffs
Overview
The heat dome that settled over the western United States in late June has continued eastward, keeping nearly 100 million people under heat alerts across 23 states. Forecasts for major Northeastern and Mid‑Atlantic cities—including Boston, New York, Philadelphia and Washington—call for highs near 100 °F (38 °C) as the dome pushes onward.
Scientists with World Weather Attribution note that the extreme heat and humidity would have been “virtually impossible” without human‑caused climate change, and a strong El Niño is expected to intensify the pattern. The persistent high‑pressure system raises the likelihood of dry thunderstorms, wildfire spread, and heightened strain on power grids as air‑conditioning demand surges.
In Southern and Central California, the National Weather Service issued a Red Flag Warning for Santa Barbara County. Pacific Gas & Electric and Southern California Edison are weighing public‑safety power shutoffs that could affect about 1,300 customers in Santa Barbara and up to 8,000 statewide. County officials have opened cooling locations—malls, libraries, parks and beaches—and listed community and senior centers in Santa Ana for relief. Farmworkers in the Central Valley are adjusting schedules and taking extra shade breaks to mitigate heat‑stroke risk.
Health officials continue to record a spike in heat‑related emergency visits, especially among older adults. Climate analyses also highlight historic temperature extremes, ranking the hottest June months in California and Colorado and the coldest May months in Missouri and Arizona, underscoring a long‑term warming trend linked to climate change.
