Google Ads introduces new channel prioritization and budget controls

Google is rolling out new channel prioritization and budget allocation controls for Google Ads, allowing marketers to rank ad networks and direct spending toward preferred inventory first. This update provides a middle ground between broad distribution and complete opt-outs, enabling advertisers to keep secondary placements active while preventing them from absorbing excessive shares of the budget.

Under the new system, advertisers can set percentage-based spending ceilings for low-priority channels. These controls apply to several campaign types, including Search, Shopping, Performance Max, and Demand Gen. For instance, in Performance Max and Demand Gen, Google bundles YouTube, Maps, Gmail, and Discover under ‘Google Channels,’ which can be prioritized over the Display Network or Search Network partners.

The rollout is occurring globally over several months, with deployment beginning in mid-October 2026. For Search campaigns utilizing the Google Display Network, a low-priority setting with a 50% allocation will be required by February 2027 to maintain current configurations. These updates aim to provide tighter guardrails around automated buying, allowing for more measurable testing of secondary inventory without full campaign exclusion.
