Google and Voltus to develop 1GW virtual power plant

Google has expanded its agreement with energy technology company Voltus to develop a virtual power plant (VPP) across the PJM Interconnection grid. The project aims to provide up to 1,070 megawatts of capacity to support grid reliability and meet the rising electricity demands of data centers.

Under this arrangement, Voltus will aggregate distributed energy resources from participating homes and businesses. These resources include smart thermostats, batteries, and industrial equipment. When the grid faces high demand or pressure, these devices will temporarily reduce electricity consumption, such as by adjusting cooling settings or utilizing stored battery power.

Participants in the program will receive financial incentives, including bill savings, for reducing their energy use during peak periods. The PJM grid serves approximately 67 million people across 13 U.S. states and Washington, D.C. This initiative represents one of the largest distributed capacity portfolios deployed by a hyperscaler to date.
