Google and Voltus virtual power plant development
Overview
Google has expanded its agreement with energy technology company Voltus to develop a virtual power plant (VPP) within the PJM Interconnection grid in the United States. The project aims to provide up to 1,070 megawatts of capacity, a significant increase from an initial 100-megawatt target. This capacity is noted to be comparable to the output of a large nuclear reactor.
The VPP functions by using software to aggregate distributed energy resources from participating homes and businesses, such as smart thermostats, batteries, and industrial equipment. During periods of high demand or grid pressure, these devices will temporarily reduce electricity consumption in exchange for financial incentives.
Google intends for this initiative to serve as a critical short-term solution to manage the surging electricity demands of AI data centers while supporting grid reliability and advancing clean energy goals.
