Google begins Android Auto 17.6 rollout with new design elements

Google has begun the rollout of Android Auto version 17.6 via the Google Play Store. This update serves as a precursor to a major redesign of the in-car interface, which is expected to implement Material 3 Expressive design principles.

Key visual changes include a new logo that transitions from the traditional blue to a more rounded green icon. While the rollout is phased and may not appear for all users immediately, the update also introduces experimental features. These include potential quick toggles for settings like ‘do not disturb’ and new ways to display weather information, such as through animated characters.

The upcoming full redesign aims to modernize the user experience with more expressive fonts, smoother animations, and an interface that adapts to various infotainment screen sizes. Future updates are also expected to introduce home screen widgets for weather and contacts, as well as immersive 3D navigation via Google Maps.
