Google attributed the incorrect information to the vandalism of public sources. Specifically, Wikipedia's entry for Altman underwent a series of unusual updates on a Wednesday, including false claims that he had been assassinated. Following the surge in activity, the Wikipedia page was corrected.

Google stated that while Wikipedia is a commonly cited source for its knowledge panels, it is not the only one, and noted that the incorrect result was not a manual change by the company.
