Google Search misinformation regarding Sam Altman

Google Search briefly displayed incorrect information claiming OpenAI CEO Sam Altman had died. The error was triggered by malicious vandalism on Altman’s Wikipedia page, which underwent an extreme burst of activity involving as many as 22 rapid revisions. These edits included false claims of an assassination, a specific death date, and a location in Seattle.

Because of the automated nature of Google’s Knowledge Graph, the false data was scraped and displayed in search results for approximately 41 minutes. Google clarified that the error was not a manual change by the company, stating, “When people vandalize public info sources, this can affect the information that appears in Search.”

The incident has highlighted broader vulnerabilities in how search engines automatically extract and aggregate data from open-source platforms like Wikipedia.
