Google enhances Android security with Gemini AI scam protections

Google is rolling out a suite of AI-powered security features for Android to combat increasingly sophisticated mobile scams, including fraudulent bank alerts and voice-cloning attacks.

A central component is the new opt-in ‘Enhanced Protection’ mode for Google Messages. This feature utilizes cloud-based Gemini models to analyze the context of conversations with unknown senders to detect fraudulent intent. To ensure privacy, these analyses are conducted within a secure, encrypted environment known as Private AI Compute. Additionally, the on-device Gemini Nano model will perform real-time analysis of unfamiliar links to identify malicious URLs.

Other system-wide protections include expanding scam detection in chat notifications to various manufacturers such as Xiaomi, Motorola, and OnePlus. Google is also enhancing screen-sharing privacy in Chrome and Android WebView by masking sensitive information like login fields and payment screens. Furthermore, new measures will prevent apps from secretly enabling call forwarding, a tactic often used to intercept one-time passcodes. In Brazil, Google has collaborated with major institutions like Banco do Brasil and Itaú Unibanco to implement verified call features to combat financial fraud.
