Google enables in-car gaming for Android Auto and Automotive OS
Google has officially moved its in-car gaming category out of beta, making games available for Android Auto and Android Automotive OS through general availability. This transition allows developers to publish compatible titles directly to the Google Play Store via open testing and production tracks, rather than relying on a restricted early-access program.
To ensure road safety, Google has implemented strict operational restrictions. Games are classified as ‘parked apps,’ meaning they can only be played when the vehicle is stationary, such as while charging an electric vehicle or waiting in a parking lot. The system automatically blocks gameplay and mutes audio as soon as the vehicle is in motion.
Technical requirements for developers include optimizing interfaces for various dashboard screen geometries and ensuring seamless state transitions so that gameplay can resume where it left off after a drive. For Android Auto users, a smartphone running Android 15 or later is required. The platform also supports physical game controllers via Bluetooth or USB to enhance the user experience.
