Google expands Android Earthquake Alerts System to over 200 regions

Google has announced a major expansion of its Android Earthquake Alerts System, increasing its coverage from 98 regions to more than 200 countries and territories. This expansion includes several new regions such as Panama, Guatemala, and Costa Rica.

The system utilizes the built-in accelerometers in Android smartphones to act as a distributed network of seismic sensors. When multiple devices detect similar ground vibrations, Google’s servers analyze the data to estimate the earthquake's epicenter and magnitude, sending alerts to users in affected areas seconds before the most intense shaking arrives.

Since its launch in 2021, the system has reportedly sent over one billion alerts worldwide. Google is also introducing an update to the alert interface. The 'Be Ready' alert level will soon include more detailed information, such as a map showing the shaking radius, the estimated magnitude, and specific safety recommendations to help users take immediate action.
