Google Android Earthquake Alerts System expansion

Overview

Google is expanding its Android Earthquake Alerts System, which uses smartphone accelerometers to detect seismic vibrations and notify users of potential earthquakes. The system, which has issued over one billion alerts since 2021, is increasing its coverage from 98 regions to more than 200 countries and territories, including new areas such as Panama, Guatemala, and Costa Rica.

As part of this expansion, the system has been made available in the Netherlands. In this region, seismic activity includes both natural tectonic movements in the south and human-induced earthquakes in the Groningen area caused by gas extraction. The alert system provides users with varying levels of warnings, ranging from initial notifications to pay attention to vibrations to critical alerts requiring immediate action.
